This phenomenon is not unfamiliar to students at Facultad de Lenguas. In order to address this problem and to help them develop self-reflection and autonomy, teachers of English IV during 2011 encouraged learners to use an Individual Mistake Frequency Log (IMFL hereafter) (Ferris, 2002:332), in which they were invited to record their mistakes, possible corrections and the reference book they might resort to so as to cope with these difficulties. Students were allowed to consult their IMFLs during in-class written assignments and exams. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of the IMFL on students‟ written work over time and thus ascertain the degree of grammar reflection learners engaged in, during the experience, as regards their performance in writing. To this effect, 105 written assignments by ten different students are analyzed to track the evolution of a number of specific mistakes, especially those that compromise written communication severely, namely, a) missing subjects, b) the absence of an obligatory determiner and c) incorrect verb patterns including passive participles and unaccussative structures. Likewise, we explore participants‟ answers to a written questionnaire on the use t hey made of the mistake logs and their role with respect to their learning process. In this paper we will present the analysis of the written assignments and the correlation between the mistakes present in these, those recorded individually in the IMFLs and learners‟ perceptions. When teaching a foreign language, diverse forms of living and understanding the world get into the classroom by means of audiovisual materials, texts, talks, coursebooks and realia. Thanks to these sources, all members in the FL classroom can discover a foreign culture and contrast it with their own. The underlying aim is to work with and form pluricultural individuals, i.e. learners with the ability to recognize others and be aware of their own traditions and values. As it is not always essential to travel abroad to be pluriculturally competent, some practical ideas will be shown as a way of exemplifying lessons that are culturally focused and exploitable from a pluricultural point of view. El propósito general de esta investigación que se inscribe en el modelo de la gramática generativa es demostrar que ciertos fenómenos vinculados con las proyecciones funcionales del ámbito nominal y con la concordancia pueden ser explicados desde una sintaxis simplificada. La propuesta incluye una discusiÛn sobre la estructura básica del Sintagma de Determinante a partir de la cual se ensamblan los constituyentes que dan lugar a distintas construcciones en el ámbito nominal. El abordaje desde la Morfología Distribuida (Halle & Marantz 1993) nos permite simplificar la estructura sintáctica y reconocer las siguientes proyecciones básicas: SD, SN˙m, Sn y SI. El recorrido detallado con respecto a la distribución de rasgos en estas proyecciones y el reconocimiento del material agregado postsintácticamente por requerimientos particulares de las lenguas resultan fundamentales para explicar los casos que analizamos y avanzar en los aspectos referidos a la variación diacrónica y sincrónica. Los fenómenos que abarcamos se agrupan en tres bloques temáticos. El primero refiere a la concordancia comitativa (Con Juan nos casamos hace dos años). Esta construcción nos lleva a revisar las características del ítem comitativo y, principalmente, la estructura de los pronombres y los rasgos del SD. La segunda construcción que abordamos es la de los SSDD con pronombres posesivos, cuyas propiedades motivan la discusión sobre los ensambles dentro del SD y la asignación de caso. El tercer fenómeno en el que nos detenemos es la concordancia ad sensum con estructuras partitivas y pseudopartitivas. En este caso, explicamos el problema de la concordancia a partir de los mismos mecanismos que se siguen para la concordancia general. Estos tres fenómenos son discutidos para el español actual, no obstante cada capítulo presenta una sección dedicada a la variaciÛn diacrónica y sincrónica, ya que con esta investigación buscamos demostrar que las diferencias que se observan en las lenguas actuales entre sí y en comparación con las lenguas antiguas responden a los mismos mecanismos (Roberts 2007). En este punto, nuestro objetivo es brindar una aproximación tipológica y un aporte teórico al problema del cambio lingüístico. Subject The topic of the resource Linguistics Lingüística Description An account of the resource El propósito general de esta investigación que se inscribe en el modelo de la gramática generativa es demostrar que ciertos fenómenos vinculados con las proyecciones funcionales del ámbito nominal y con la concordancia pueden ser explicados desde una sintaxis simplificada. La propuesta incluye una discusiÛn sobre la estructura básica del Sintagma de Determinante a partir de la cual se ensamblan los constituyentes que dan lugar a distintas construcciones en el ámbito nominal. El abordaje desde la Morfología Distribuida (Halle & Marantz 1993) nos permite simplificar la estructura sintáctica y reconocer las siguientes proyecciones básicas: SD, SN˙m, Sn y SI. El recorrido detallado con respecto a la distribución de rasgos en estas proyecciones y el reconocimiento del material agregado postsintácticamente por requerimientos particulares de las lenguas resultan fundamentales para explicar los casos que analizamos y avanzar en los aspectos referidos a la variación diacrónica y sincrónica. Los fenómenos que abarcamos se agrupan en tres bloques temáticos. El primero refiere a la concordancia comitativa (Con Juan nos casamos hace dos años). Esta construcción nos lleva a revisar las características del ítem comitativo y, principalmente, la estructura de los pronombres y los rasgos del SD. La segunda construcción que abordamos es la de los SSDD con pronombres posesivos, cuyas propiedades motivan la discusión sobre los ensambles dentro del SD y la asignación de caso. El tercer fenómeno en el que nos detenemos es la concordancia ad sensum con estructuras partitivas y pseudopartitivas. En este caso, explicamos el problema de la concordancia a partir de los mismos mecanismos que se siguen para la concordancia general. Estos tres fenómenos son discutidos para el español actual, no obstante cada capítulo presenta una sección dedicada a la variaciÛn diacrónica y sincrónica, ya que con esta investigación buscamos demostrar que las diferencias que se observan en las lenguas actuales entre sí y en comparación con las lenguas antiguas responden a los mismos mecanismos (Roberts 2007). Within the Reasearch Project “Estructuras tempranas y tardías en Español como Lengua Materna” (J014) we have studied the acquisition of passive and unaccusative structures both in Spanish as an L1 and in English as an L2. The present study intends to show that L2 Spanish learners know the grammatical properties of unaccusative verbs and treat them as such. To this purpose in mind, an experiment of delayed repetition of a series of 11 pictures contained in a short story was carried out. The searcher told it to 5 adult students at Leiden University who have been learning Spanish for an average of 4 1/2 years (4 to 10 years). The results show that in all cases the subjects followed a constant pattern of response: they produced the expected verbs correctly and the difficulties evinced are of two types: lack of knowledge of the lexical item (verb) they had to use to describe the picture and the causativisation of some unaccusative verbs which are not compatible with this construction. These data seem to indicate that overall these learners know the structural properties of unaccusative verbs and the use of the clitic se with particular verbs – aparecer and nacer- is the syntactic reflex that shows the learners’ attempt to morphologically mark unaccusativity. Thus, to correct these errors, learners need more time to sharpen their knowledge of the specific idiosyncratic properties of certain verbs of different subclasses within the unaccusative class.
