<p text="" align="justify">Carmen de Burgos (Almería, 1867 - Madrid, 1932) fue una escritora, periodista, maestra, traductora y activista española. Se caracterizó por su alto compromiso político; fue una intelectual implicada en cuestiones políticas y sociales de su país: escribió, tradujo, fundó revistas, fue corresponsal de guerra, entre otras actividades. Mediante sus escritos expresó su ideología feminista; fuertemente partidaria de la independencia de la mujer y del sufragio femenino, luchó por los derechos de las mujeres. En cuanto a su labor como traductora, realizó numerosas traducciones al español de diversas obras inglesas con el fin de dar a conocer literatura extranjera en España. Algunos de los autores cuyas obras tradujo fueron Ruskin, Renan, Moebius, Salgari y Rachilde. Trabajó en seis editoriales distintas. Fue una de las pocas mujeres traductoras de España. Enfrentó los cánones patriarcales de la época logrando un importante reconocimiento en la literatura española.</p>

<p text="" align="justify">Nació en Cuba el 31 de diciembre de 1803 y falleció en México el 7 de mayo de 1839. Humanista, abogado y el primer poeta romántico de América. Lo exiliaron a Estados Unidos debido a que conspiró contra del régimen colonial español y, finalmente, marchó a México donde estudió gramática. Luego, en La Habana, estudió derecho y desempeñó diversos cargos en el ámbito político y jurídico. Debido a su gran dedicación, tuvo importante influencia en la literatura de su época en virtud de su poesía patriótica de estilo romántico. Sobresalió por su abundante labor como traductor de obras literarias clásicas y contemporáneas. Entre ellas, principalmente se destacan Oda Al Niágara, En el teocalli de Cholula y A la estrella de Venus. Además, tradujo numerosas obras del italiano, latín, francés e inglés como El Epicúreo, Lecciones de Historia Universal, El fanatismo y Saúl, entre otras.</p>

<p text="" align="justify">Los descubrimientos de la lingüística de corpus han gestado una visión del léxico como algo más que un conjunto de ítems aislados (Sinclair,1991; Lewis, 1993, 1997 y 2000; y Schmitt, 2010). En este sentido, Wray (2002) define como secuencias formulaicas (SFs) a “una secuencia, continua o discontinua, de palabras […] almacenada y recuperada de la memoria como una unidad en el momento de uso, no sujeta a generación o análisis de la gramática del lenguaje” (p. 9). Estudios confirman la ubicuidad de estas frases típicas que comparten un significado universal para una comunidad de hablantes. Para los estudiantes de una lengua extranjera, la percepción holística de estas secuencias y la imprimación conjunta de su forma, uso y significado puede resultar un desafío (MacKenzie y Kayman, 2016). Suscribiendo a Boers y Lindstromberg (2009; 2012), Granger (2015), Granger y Meunier (2008), Wood (2010) y Wray (2008) consideramos necesario que estudiantes de ILE de FadeL, reconozcan y empleen SFs productiva y eficazmente. A tal fin, investigamos la instrucción explícita y el aprendizaje de dichas secuencias en talleres UPAMI, ILI, LI1, LI31 y Didáctica Especial y Residencia y diseñamos cursos de transferencia para docentes de escuelas primarias y secundarias de nuestra provincia. Estas experiencias orientaron la intervención pedagógica en escuelas primarias (PIN J033) que se ha comenzado a implementar a través de dos ciclos de formación para docentes (2019) y del diseño y publicación de materiales didácticos específicos, retroalimentando nuestra práctica docente como formadores de futuros profesionales de ILE en nuestra facultad.</p>

New perspectives on vocabulary learning and teaching have shifted away from the conception of vocabulary as merely single words to adopt a more comprehensive approach that includes formulaic sequences. These expressions, defined by Wray (2002) as a string “continuous or discontinuous of words […] that is stored and retrieved whole from memory at the time of use” (p. 7), amount to approximately 52 % of written discourse, according to Erman and Warren (2000). This “pervasiveness” becomes evident in fictional narrative texts such as myths and legends, which additionally share unique grammatical, lexical and stylistic features. The wealthy lexical content that pervades these text types certainly deserves special treatment in the EFL classroom. Both myths and legends offer an array of formulaic expressions that can be explicitly taught not only to enrich learners’ vocabulary, but also to boost their receptive and productive skills. To start with, the audience will be given a brief introduction to what a formulaic sequence is and the benefits that EFL learners can derive from becoming aware of them and using them effectively. Subsequently, they will read an abridged version of a legend for a group of children. After that, they will be presented with a set of pre-reading tasks, which they will have to order considering their linguistic and task complexity. Once their didactic sequences have been discussed, they will be briefly introduced to Nation (2001)’s three processes for learning a lexical item: noticing, retrieval and generative use. Afterwards, they will solve and analyse a series of while-reading tasks aimed at helping EFL learners to both notice a set of selected formulaic sequences and re-use them through more or less guided practice. During their group discussion, they will fill in a checklist through which they will reflect upon the type of task, the context for each task and the possibility for EFL learners to predict the meaning of these chunks, among some other relevant features. Finally, different post-reading tasks will prompt the participants to discuss the possibility for learners to employ the selected formulaic sequences in a new context. We invite participants to genuinely embrace our proposal, discovering in them texts which abound in sequences worth teaching due to the considerable advantages they offer EFL learners.

Los estudiantes de ILE (inglés como lengua extranjera) que aspiran a lograr un nivel elevado de competencia general a menudo tienen dificultades para producir textos escritos que respondan a la formulaicidad adecuada típica del uso nativo. En un curso universitario avanzado de ILE en la Universidad Nacional del Comahue, se diseñó una experiencia de enfoque en la forma (FonF) (Doughty y ‎Williams, 1998) para ayudar a los alumnos a percibir nueve secuencias formulaicas (SFs), recuperarlas de la memoria y usarlas productivamente. Wray (2002) se refiere a las secuencias formulaicas, definiéndolas como "una secuencia, continua o discontinua, de palabras […] almacenada y recuperada de la memoria como una unidad en el momento de uso, no sujeta a generación o análisis de la gramática del lenguaje” (p. 9). En dos oportunidades se utilizó un ejercicio de dictogloss modificado (Wajnryb 1990) como técnica para proporcionar a los estudiantes oportunidades para enfocarse en el significado, la forma y el uso contextualizado de las SFs. Esta técnica consiste en el dictado a velocidad normal de habla de un texto – en este caso diseñado especialmente para contener las SFs estudiadas – de manera tal que los estudiantes no puedan reproducirlo palabra por palabra, a pesar de que tomen notas durante el dictado. En una etapa subsiguiente en grupos intentan escribir un texto que exprese los mismos significados que percibieron en el texto original. En un último momento se comparan las versiones ofrecidas por los distintos grupos con la versión original y se selecciona aquella que mejor transmita las ideas dictadas. En nuestra presentación evaluamos la efectividad de este tipo de tarea según la producción inmediata y posterior de ensayos argumentativos. Existe evidencia aún tres meses después del dictogloss de un alto grado de uso espontáneo de SFs apropiado al contexto y correcto en su forma.

En dos escuelas secundarias nocturnas en la ciudad de General Roca se llevó a cabo una experiencia de lecto-comprensión con foco en la adquisición de secuencias formulaicas discursivas de tipo cronológico-temporales. En el marco de un proyecto para desarrollar la competencia intercultural en tercero y cuarto año, los estudiantes de edades entre 18 y 20 leyeron e interpretaron leyendas de Mapuches, y pueblos originarios de Filipinas y Norteamérica para luego producir sus propias versiones. Se trabajó con leyendas como género literario en un intento de relacionar ejes de conocimiento dentro del área lengua y literatura en un contexto AICLE (Aprendizaje Integrado de Contenido y Lengua Extranjera), donde según Coyle et al. (2010:1) “una segunda lengua es empleada para la enseñanza y el aprendizaje tanto de la lengua extranjera como del contenido mismo”. La experiencia áulica consistió en una serie de actividades guiadas con el objetivo de activar los procesos que Nation (2001) postula para brindar a los estudiantes oportunidades suficientes para propiciar la adquisición de vocabulario: identificar, recuperar y emplear generativamente. En este trabajo describimos los resultados del análisis de las producciones finales de los alumnos en formato de leyenda y discutimos las variaciones introducidas por ellos en las secuencias seleccionadas. Sus escritos demuestran que se apropiaron de las secuencias formulaicas en el idioma extranjero ya que pudieron hacer un uso espontáneo efectivo de las mismas en el marco de este género discursivo.

En esta presentación se discuten los beneficios de la instrucción explícita de secuencias de palabras en un taller para adultos mayores orientado al desarrollo de la lectura comprensiva en inglés a partir de textos auténticos. Los textos en cuestión son las letras de canciones de los años 40 a 70, a partir de los cuales, los participantes comprenden y adquieren vocabulario. Autores como Sinclair (1991), Lewis (1993, 1997 y 2000), Hoey (2005) Meunier y Granger (2008) y Schmitt (2010) promueven una visión del léxico que va más allá de la palabra como unidad de análisis y enfatizan la enseñanza de unidades pluri-lexemáticas como las secuencias formulaicas (SFs). Según Wray (2002) una SF es "una secuencia, continua o discontinua, de palabras […] almacenada y recuperada como una unidad de la memoria en el momento de uso,” no sujeta a generación o análisis de la gramática del lenguaje” (p. 9). Los contenidos y metodología del curso suscriben a estas nuevas perspectivas acerca del vocabulario. Las letras de canciones son ideales para la enseñanza de estas secuencias por su naturaleza repetitiva y porque las canciones hacen referencia a significados similares, expresados en SFs recurrentes (Jarrell, 2000 en Rabbini, 2003; Schmitt y Carter, 2004). El taller apunta a la enseñanza explícita y al aprendizaje implícito de SFs frecuentes (Lindstromberg y Boers, 2008; Boers y Lindstromberg, 2009) en canciones sobre el mismo tema. Esto favorece el desarrollo de la comprensión lectora en los participantes (Nuttal, 2006; Hedgcock y Ferris, 2009) y de su capacidad para interactuar de manera oral y escrita (Wray, 2008) utilizando frases de uso frecuente en inglés. Los resultados obtenidos a través de la resolución de tareas de reconocimiento y producción de SFs, post período de instrucción, permiten afirmar que la metodología implementada impactó positivamente tanto en el desarrollo de la comprensión lectora de nuestros estudiantes como en su capacidad de utilizar comunicativamente distintas SFs.

Based on studies carried out at FADeL, a set of practical tips on FS teaching for the FL classroom are offered in relation to the nature of the sequences to teach and of the pedagogical intervention planned, the number of hours devoted to FS teaching, and activity types both for the teaching and practice of these chunks and for testing. Other important factors to consider refer to learner characteristics, learning style and FS awareness.

Based on studies carried out at FADeL, a set of practical tips on FS teaching for the FL classroom are offered in relation to the nature of the sequences to teach and of the pedagogical intervention planned, the number of hours devoted to FS teaching, and activity types both for the teaching and practice of these chunks and for testing. Other important factors to take into account refer to learner characteristics, learning style and FS awareness.
Research into different multiword phrases has shed light on the need to devote teaching time to these sequences in foreign language classrooms. A shift away from the individual word to, among others, the formulaic sequence (FS), defined by Wray (2002) as “a sequence, continuous or discontinuous, of words or other elements, which is, or appears to be, prefabricated: that is, stored and retrieved whole from memory at the time of use, rather than being subject to generation or analysis by the language grammar” (p. 9), has led to studies which analyse the effects of explicit instruction of FSs in different educational contexts and levels of proficiency in the foreign language. There is by now sufficient evidence (Ab Manan et al. 2014a and b; Alhassan and Wood 2015; Boers and Lindstromberg 2012; Čolović-Marković 2012; Jones and Haywood 2004; Lewis 2009; Peters and Pauwels 2015 and Wood 2015) that advocates the teaching of formulaic sequences in EFL contexts. One such study carried out in an Argentinean university with Spanish-speaking learners of English of different proficiency levels has highlighted the implications of a number of relevant issues in connection with the learning and, consequently, the teaching of vocabulary in general to learners of different levels and in multiple learning contexts. The findings refer to a) three explicit, focus-on-form FS instruction experiments (with beginner level and advanced level students), b) a small-corpus study into FS implicit learning in a content-based course, c) a longitudinal case study of one learner’s formulaic competence across his written production in an academic year and d) the acquisition of song-derived FSs by senior adults taking a reading comprehension course at university.
The data obtained point to learners’ heightened awareness of the patterns of use and meanings of the selected FSs as a result of pedagogical intervention. Significant benefits of FS teaching have been found for FS retrieval and acquisition in controlled conditions and free contexts. There is little evidence of incidental intake of FSs present in the reading material by learners, which shows that attention needs to be explicitly drawn to their existence, pervasiveness, use, form and meanings. The longitudinal case study reveals a systematic and conscious approach to FS learning, with evidence of a continuously recycled and intentionally refurbished process of FS acquisition. FS recognition and comprehension has been proved to improve in time through a FS-focused approach and even elderly participants evince an important degree of sensitivity to the internal make-up of FSs.
The different sets of data attest to the benefits of FS explicitly instruction in a foreign language as a means of equipping learners with prefabricated units of meaning to perform more naturally in the L2. Practical tips on FS teaching for the FL classroom are offered in relation to the nature of the sequences to teach and of the pedagogical intervention planned, the number of hours devoted to instruction, and activity types both for the teaching and practice of these chunks and for testing purposes.

Abstract
In this paper, we report on an exploratory study into the recurrence of formulaic sequences in unabridged versions of myths and legends from different parts of the world in English. We describe the steps taken to build up a small corpus of FSs typical of these narrative text types. Those sequences which are both frequent and pedagogically relevant for ESL primary school students will be subsequently selected and used to design teaching material for this group of young learners.

Fictional narrative texts such as short stories, novels, fables, legends and myths share certain grammatical, lexical and stylistic features that make them unique. For this reason, it is of prime importance that students of English as a foreign language deal with this specificity in the classroom especially by exploring how ideas are developed and how meaning is conveyed through the use of specific vocabulary in these text types.
New perspectives on vocabulary learning and teaching have led linguists, such as Sinclair (1991), Lewis (1993, 1997 & 2000), Hoey (2005), Meunier & Granger (2008) and Schmitt (2010), among others, to redefine the Lexicon by claiming that this inventory is not only made up of morphemes and words but also formulaic sequences. Precisely, a single instance of this recurrent language phenomenon is defined as, “a sequence continuous or discontinuous, of words” [...] “which is, or appears to be prefabricated: that is, stored and retrieved whole from memory at the time of use, rather than being subject to generation or analysis by the language grammar" (Wray 2002: 9).
In this exploratory study, we set out to investigate the recurrence of FSs in unabridged versions of myths and legends from different parts of the world in English. We report on a number of steps that were followed in order to build a small corpus of FSs which are inherent in these narrative text types. A subsequent selection of those strings of words which are both frequently used and pedagogically relevant for ESL primary school students from this corpus will lead to the design of teaching material for this group of young learners.

Los estudios de lingüística de corpus de lenguaje en uso en diversos idiomas señalan la necesidad de un cambio de perspectiva con respecto al léxico ya no como un reservorio de palabras individuales sino como un repertorio de frases pre-fabricadas que los hablantes almacenan en su memoria. Entre estas frases se encuentran las secuencias formulaicas (Wray 2002), también denominadas “unidades equivalentes de morfemas” (Wray 2008), que constituyen unidades de significado recuperadas de la memoria como un todo, que sufren pocas modificaciones y no se generan de manera creativa. Diversos autores han demostrado que la didáctica de las lenguas extranjeras, por lo tanto, debe reflejar esta concepción del lenguaje de manera tal de garantizar una adquisición gradual y desde etapas tempranas de este lenguaje formulaico que permite a los hablantes comunicar significados de manera fluida y eficiente. Se sugiere un abordaje a la enseñanza del vocabulario en una lengua extranjera que, a través de la instrucción explícita con técnicas del Enfoque en la Forma, permita dirigir la atención de los estudiantes a la existencia y recurrencia de estas frases, sus usos y funciones y brindarles oportunidades para su práctica y empleo productivo en contextos guiados y más libres. Es imprescindible que estas perspectivas se traduzcan en modificaciones dentro de las asignaturas didácticas y de desarrollo de competencia lingüística de los idiomas en el nivel universitario y de formación para que luego alcancen todos los niveles de enseñanza de los idiomas extranjeros.

<p text="" align="justify">ABSTRACT<br />As explained by Aleida Assman, the last two decades of the 20th century saw the development and consolidation of memory research, a diverse field including “neuronal, medical, and psychological as well as literary, cultural, social, and political studies” that investigate “how we live by our memories, how we are haunted by them, how we use and abuse them” (210). The boom in memory studies results from a widespread interest in the revisiting of the past generated, among other factors, by the postcolonial situation in which humans that have been deprived of their indigenous history and culture are trying to (re)write their own narratives and memories (210-211). The present thesis centers on the Anglophone Caribbean – where formal colonialism began to disappear in the 1960s – and aims at exploring the construction of memory as represented in a selection of three novels published by Caribbean women writers in the 21st century. These are Elizabeth Nunez’s <em>Prospero’s Daughter</em> (2006), Andrea Levy’s <em>The Long Song</em> (2010) and Joanne Hillhouse’s <em>Oh Gad!</em> (2012). The initial hypothesis of this study is that, in the corpus under consideration, memory is represented as a contact zone permeated by struggles between cultures in asymmetrical power relations. It is creatively constructed in multiple spaces and practices, and results from the attempt to (re)write Caribbean identities. In relation to the theoretical background supporting the analysis, this study is grounded in a selection of categories which includes Michel Foucault’s and Anibal Quijano’s theories of power, both based on the conception of power as a dynamic relationship involving conflict and struggle –, Mary Louise Pratt’s definition of the contact zone and Stuart Hall’s theories of cultural identities in general, and of Caribbean cultural identities in particular. The discussion of memory is anchored in Halbwachs’ concept of collective memory, Nora’s definition of the <em>lieux de memoire</em>, Jan Assman’s distinction between communicative and cultural memory, and Paul Ricoeur’s analysis of the pragmatic dimension of memory, among others.</p>

Estos retos se multiplican en aquellos casos en que la investigación se centra en la exploración de la subjetividad entendida como “la unidad inseparable de los procesos simbólicos y emocionales que emerge como nueva producción en el curso de la experiencia social e histórica de los individuos” (González Rey, Mitjáns Martínez & Bezerra, 2016, p.262). En particular, en nuestra tesis de doctorado, nos proponemos estudiar en profundidad las concepciones de los docentes acerca del conocimiento del léxico y su enseñanza en lengua extranjera. Para ello, consideramos indispensable una exploración cualitativa de las subjetividades de los profesores, quienes se tornan sujetos de su actividad en la toma de decisiones dentro del marco de la experiencia institucional. Ahora bien, como sugiere Vasilachis (2009), la existencia de un sistema de presupuestos con los que los investigadores abordan sus indagaciones está ampliamente aceptada (Guba y Lincoln, 1994; Creswell, 1998; Creswell, Hanson, Clark Plano y Morales, 2007; Patton, 2002; Savage, 2006, citados en Vasilachis, 2009). También la investigación cualitativa se ve rodeada, tal como sostienen Denzin y Lincoln (2012), por una compleja variedad de supuestos. Por ello, en este trabajo no nos adentraremos en la totalidad de las dificultades que se nos presentan en las distintas fases del proceso de investigación, desde el diseño mismo hasta la escritura definitiva de la tesis. Nos ocuparemos, sin embargo, de algunos de los presupuestos que consideramos de mayor relevancia para la labor de investigación. En particular, haremos referencia a aquellos supuestos que, a partir de la revisión de la literatura acerca de los estudios de corte cualitativo, así como de la propia experiencia, aparecen como pilares fundamentales de la tarea de investigación cualitativa en general, y de la exploración de subjetividades en particular.</p>

<p text="" align="justify">En la enseñanza universitaria se desarrollan actividades que requieren de ciertos saberes relacionados con el uso y los criterios de selección de recursos digitales que se supone que todos deberían conocer, pero que, en definitiva, pocos conocen. Lo cierto es que nadie tiene certezas acerca de a quién corresponde la tarea de enseñarlos ni en qué etapa de la educación. Es así que la mayoría de nuestros supuestos nativos digitales se acercan al final de sus estudios universitarios y se encuentran con el obstáculo de desconocer criterios de selección y de uso eficiente de herramientas tecnológicas para la búsqueda eficiente de bibliografía académica. En este trabajo, compartimos algunas experiencias de nuestra práctica docente en el escenario educativo del siglo XXI, enmarcada en una metodología que se centra en la actividad colaborativa, la integración de contenidos y habilidades que se sustenta en la combinación de los tres conceptos que atraviesan nuestra propuesta académica: interdisciplinaridad, multimodalidad y literacidad electrónica.</p>

<p text="" align="justify">Speech rhythm is viewed as the product of different phonetic and phonological properties. This work shows the rhythmic acquisition of instructed learners of English as an L2 whose mother tongue is Spanish. Two main variables are considered: levels of language proficiency at university and type of elicitation task. Taking into account that rhythm can be measured acoustically, the production of speech is computed by means of the metric VarcoV, which considers the duration of vocalic intervals. The metric measurements reflect the development of L2 spea -like rhythm affected by the type of task.</p>

<p text="" align="justify">Affective/humanistic approaches help develop a positive attitude towards language learning, and thus promote language development. I have found in these approaches the underlying principles behind most of my classroom practices, feeling that they backed my beliefs about teaching and learning. <br />This dissertation intends to share specific experiences on how these ideas could be used with young learners and adults; in ESP and EGP contexts. There is no limit if we really want a change, if we believe that the foreign language classroom could be a territory for personal and professional growth. <br />I firmly sustain that there is no need to leave the cognitive aside when dealing with the affective but I can perfectly understand that we, teachers, might feel a little insecure as we have started to move on far less steady ground where we must handle the unpredictable, both affectively and cognitively. “It is unrealistic to suppose that methodology, curriculum design, and classroom management will be immune from the level of uncertainty avoidance prevalent in the wider society” (Grundy, 2001). <br />This paper starts by defining the terms “affect” and “approach”, i.e. why it is that we talk about “approaches” and what “affect” is in a language learning environment. We then turn to consider how the affective side of the learner started to be included within broader educational contexts and within foreign and second language learning. <br />We will look at affectivity from two sides: first, the language learner as an individual and second, as an active participant in socio- cultural situations (Arnold & Brown, 1999, p. 8). Among the individual factors that may affect learning, self- esteem, motivation and learning styles will be considered; among the relational factors affecting learning we will concentrate on cooperative learning as a means to promote and enhance language learning. <br />Teachers may find a detailed analysis of the principles underlying the affective/ humanistic approaches and some specific examples on possible activities or techniques they may wish to implement in their classes.</p>
