Este estudio de caso se centra en el desarrollo de la competencia formulaica de un estudiante en particular en el transcurso de un año, al cursar la asignatura Lengua Inglesa III del Profesorado en Inglés (FADEL, Universidad Nacional del Comahue). Se realizó un análisis longitudinal del uso espontáneo de secuencias formulaícas rastreadas en todos los trabajos escritos de un estudiante universitario de nivel avanzado de ILE. Con el consentimiento expreso del alumno, la totalidad de sus trabajos prácticos fueron analizados utilizando <i>Wordsmith Tools 6.0</i> (Scott 2015) para determinar cuáles son las SFs de preferencia del alumno y cuáles, de las enseñadas en clase, comienza a emplear en su producción de manera espontánea en contextos de uso no obligatorios. A partir de este análisis, las SFs empleadas se categorizaron de acuerdo a nivel estilístico y complejidad de las secuencias determinados por número de palabras que las constituyen y opacidad/transparencia de su significado. A través de la caracterización de las secuencias empleadas longitudinalmente (Ab Mannan 2014a y 2014b) se brinda evidencia del crecimiento de la competencia formulaica en este caso en particular. De los datos obtenidos y del análisis cualitativo-descriptivo de las producciones se desprenden implicancias pedagógicas para la enseñanza de SFs en ILE en nivel avanzado. Reseachers like Boers and Lindstromberg (2012) and Granger and Meunier (2008) advocate the explicit teaching of these sequences as beneficial for the development of L2 learners’ formulaic competence. Based on research carried out by Čolović-Marković (2012) and Peters and Pauwels (2015), this paper reports on a vocabulary-focused instruction experience with three groups of university English-as-a-Foreign-Language (EFL) learners taking the English-teacher training course at Comahue University. The study explores the effects of two different instruction conditions for the teaching of nine pedagogically relevant FSs on two experimental groups (EG1 and EG2) in comparison with a control group (CG). The research aims to analyse fourth-year Spanish speaking learners’ acquisition rate of the target sequences (TFSs) a) in controlled settings (cued-output tests) and b) in spontaneous written production. It also aims to assess the degree of correctness/ variation with which TFSs are retrieved in both situations (controlled and free). The research questions are:<br />1. Does vocabulary form-focused instruction of FSs have an effect on a) number of FSs recalled and b) number of FSs used spontaneously?<br />2. Does the type of focused instruction of FSs have an effect on a) number of FSs recalled and b) number of FSs used spontaneously?<br />3. How similar /different are learners’ versions to the target FSs? For 1 and 2 above, a fourth research question applies,<br />4. If so, how long after the intervention does the effect continue to exist?<br />The teaching conditions for EG1 included a combination of meaning-form-use awareness-raising tasks, a dictogloss (Wajnryb 1990) and cued-output practice activities. EG2’s treatment consists of only two dictogloss, controlled production tasks. A pre-test/postest within-subject design was adopted. Data were collected through a) three cued-output postests (immediately after instruction, and two delayed) and, to measure spontaneous use of FSs, b) through three written practical assignments (essays), submitted by participants as part of the course requirements. This paper centres on the descriptive analysis of the effects of explicit instruction as measured through the rate of correct and non-target answers in both data collection procedures. The findings shed light on the type of variations introduced in learners’ answers to the different tasks, which evince a certain degree of formulaicity observed in the syntactic make-up of the phrases, while FS form seems to be negatively affected by the recall of function words. Meaning and pragmatic appropriacy appear to suffer in some other cases, even if, in appearance, the TFSs have been correctly retrieved. The study of native language corpora has shown that language presents repeated strings of words across texts and contexts, which might indicate that much more of language is patterned around clusters of words than was originally thought. The concept of the lexicon as made up of words in isolation is slowly giving way to a different perspective which has as its units recurrent sequences of words, some of which performing as discourse organizers. In this article we analyse a corpus of 237 academic essays (114,514 words) written by Spanish-speaking advanced learners of English at Comahue University in order to characterize their use of certain discourse-organizing formulaic sequences. First, an overview of the major changes in perspective is offered with respect to depth of knowledge of vocabulary, the nature of the lexicon and the role of lexis in language. Then, the learner corpus of formulaic sequences (FSs) is described in terms of the context, the corpus description and the selection of FSs. Results are presented for each of the selected FSs and compared to occurrences of those same strings in the British National Corpus. Finally, in the light of this study’s findings some suggestions for the teaching of vocabulary are provided that will contribute to learners’ acquisition of large chunks of language. La problemática alrededor de este género en contextos pedagógicos gira en torno al impacto de las mismas en la presentación y práctica de estructuras gramaticales y la incorporación de vocabulario específico. Las nuevas perspectivas del vocabulario y su enseñanza (Sinclair 1991;Lewis 1993, 1997 y 2000; Hoey 2005; Meunier y Granger 2008; Schmitt 2010) promueven una visión del léxico que supera a la palabra como unidad de análisis, enfatizando la enseñanza de distintos tipos de unidades plurilexemáticas, entre las que se encuentran las secuencias formulaicas (SFs). Estas unidades son, según Wray (2002), "una secuencia, continua o discontinua, de palabras […] almacenada y recuperada como una unidad de la memoria en el momento de uso” no sujeta a generación o análisis de la gramática del lenguaje” (p. 9). Como experiencia piloto se diseñó y dictó una clase focalizada en secuencias formulaicas de una canción a un grupo reducido de alumnos universitarios avanzados del Profesorado y Traductorado en Inglés, Fadel, UNCo, luego de la cual se les suministró una encuesta. Dicho cuestionario los invitaba a reflexionar sobre el uso de canciones en el aprendizaje de un idioma extranjero para así determinar si las tareas diseñadas facilitaban la adquisición de las secuencias seleccionadas. A partir de los resultados, se esbozan posibles líneas de acción para enseñar SFs por medio de canciones en contextos similares, que permitan a los alumnos ampliar su léxico mediante construcciones más idiomáticas y naturales según el uso nativo. Las nuevas perspectivas del vocabulario y su enseñanza (Sinclair 1991;Lewis 1993, 1997 y 2000; Hoey 2005; Meunier y Granger 2008; Schmitt 2010) promueven una visión del léxico que supera a la palabra como unidad de análisis, enfatizando la enseñanza de distintos tipos de unidades plurilexemáticas, entre las que se encuentran las secuencias formulaicas (SFs). Estas unidades son, según Wray (2002), "una secuencia, continua o discontinua, de palabras […] almacenada y recuperada como una unidad de la memoria en el momento de uso” no sujeta a generación o análisis de la gramática del lenguaje” (p. 9). Como experiencia piloto se diseñó y dictó una clase focalizada en secuencias formulaicas de una canción a un grupo reducido de alumnos universitarios avanzados del Profesorado y Traductorado en Inglés, Fadel, UNCo, luego de la cual se les suministró una encuesta. Dicho cuestionario los invitaba a reflexionar sobre el uso de canciones en el aprendizaje de un idioma extranjero para así determinar si las tareas diseñadas facilitaban la adquisición de las secuencias seleccionadas. A partir de los resultados, se esbozan posibles líneas de acción para enseñar SFs por medio de canciones en contextos similares, que permitan a los alumnos ampliar su léxico mediante construcciones más idiomáticas y naturales según el uso nativo. Asimismo, se sugieren opciones de diseño de materiales didácticos para su implementación con miras a construir un entorno de aprendizaje significativo y perdurable que favorezca la apropiación de nuestro objeto de estudio. En las últimas décadas de investigación lingüística sobre el léxico se observa una marcada recurrencia de cadenas de palabras que se acompañan con una frecuencia significativa. Incontables estudios de distintos tipos de corpus han demostrado que el Léxico no sólo constituye una lista de palabras individuales, sino que, en nuestra mente, también se almacenan secuencias de palabras que han sido registradas por su alta frecuencia en el input al que hemos sido expuestos (Wray 2002, 2008; Hoey 2005). Si bien inicialmente estas investigaciones se aplicaron a corpus de lengua materna (Sinclair 1991; Granger y Meunier 2008), las implicancias para el aprendizaje de un idioma extranjero se han convertido en una problemática central en la lingüística aplicada (Ghadessy, Herny y Roseberry 2001; Meunier y Granger 2008; Corrigan, Moravcsik, Ouali y Wheatley 2009; Li and Schmitt 2010). Este cambio de perspectiva ha determinado nuevas líneas de estudio para la enseñanza de estas cadenas léxicas que llamaremos “secuencias formulaicas” (SF) siguiendo a Wray (2002), quien las define como “una secuencia, continua o discontinua, de palabras o de otros elementos, que es, o parece ser, prefabricada, es decir, almacenada y recuperada como una unidad de la memoria en el momento de uso, en lugar de estar sujeta a generación o análisis de la gramática del lenguaje" (p. 9). En nuestro estudio analizamos los ensayos académicos (111.000 palabras) escritos por 240 estudiantes hispanoparlantes avanzados de inglés en la Universidad de Comahue, con su consentimiento. Estudiamos aquellas SFs que introducen puntos de vista, describimos la frecuencia de uso de SFs como ‘from my/this point of view’ y ‘all things considered’ y establecemos patrones de uso canónicos y no canónicos en el corpus. A partir de los resultados, delineamos propuestas didácticas orientadas a la enseñanza de estas secuencias, esenciales para el tipo de texto estudiado (Jones y Haywood 2004). Considerando su comportamiento como unidades de significado y su composición heterogénea, así como la importancia que el manejo de las mismas implica para estudiantes avanzados de ILE, señalamos pautas metodológicas orientadas a equipar a los alumnos de herramientas léxicas para lograr mayor naturalidad en su discurso.
