An account of the resource

Teaching pronunciation in language courses has traditionally followed two approaches: the intuitive-imitative approach and the analytic-linguistic approach. The former consists in reproducing the target language on the basis of a good model without any explicit instruction. The latter proposes reflection on pronunciation features through such tools as graphic representations like the phonetic alphabet, articulatory descriptions and contrastive information. It is meant to complement the former as analysis follows imitation. The role of pronunciation teaching has varied through time in the light of the development of different methods following either of these approaches. While the grammar-translation, reading-based and cognitive methods tended to deemphasize or even ignore the importance of pronunciation, the direct method, audiolingual method and naturalistic approaches paid more attention to pronunciation features. The communicative approach has brought renewed interest in pronunciation as an important tool for communication. In the light...

The role of prominences in typologically different rhythms

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Speech rhythm is understood as a byproduct of phonetic and phonological characteristics like syllabic structure, vowel reduction and the role of accent. In order to capture these properties, several rhythm metrics have been proposed in the literature so as to give an account of different aspects of rhythm. The aim of this study is to focus on the role of accent, as manifested in the prominences of an utterance, in the timing patterns of two typologically different rhythms represented by Spanish and English. Two rhythm metrics, %V and VarcoV, have been chosen in order to measure the production of a specially designed reading task by speakers from Patagonia, south of Argentina, as well as the southeast of England and the northeast of the United States. Results indicate that (1) there is a significant effect of prominences in the two English varieties, but not in Spanish, as shown by %V and VarcoV, and (2) there is a categorical difference between rhythm types, as shown by VarcoV.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.

Speech rhythm is viewed as the product of different phonetic and phonological properties. This work shows the rhythmic acquisition of instructed learners of English as an L2 whose mother tongue is Spanish. Two main variables are considered: levels of language proficiency at university and type of elicitation task. Taking into account that rhythm can be measured acoustically, the production of speech is computed by means of the metric VarcoV, which considers the duration of vocalic intervals. The metric measurements reflect the development of L2 spea -like rhythm affected by the type of task.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.

Abstract
This paper analyses the prosodic characteristics of spontaneous speech as conditioned by the type of discourse practice. Speech is compared in two different types of discour-se by the same speaker, a conference and an interview, both related to popular science presentations on the same topic. Prosody is analysed at the prosody-pragmatics interface: nuclear tone configurations and phrasing in relation to their pragmatic meaning. In this line, intonation is studied in terms of the coding and processing of foreground and back-ground information. Results show that there are differences in relation to phrasing and the frequency of occurrence of certain tonal configurations. These differences are explai-ned taking into account the specific contextual characteristics of each discourse practice. Specifically, the degree of accessibility and the possibility of communicative repairs are considered. The findings pave the way for further research into other communicative si-tuations with different speakers and different modes of discourse organisation.
