<p>La micro-ficción en inglés se presenta, en nuestro contexto universitario, como un desafío para quienes se atreven a afrontarlo, desde lo lingüístico, socio-cultural y afectivo. Este trabajo explorará el potencial de los microrrelatos como herramientas para desarrollar las habilidades orales de alumnos avanzados del Profesorado y Traductorado en Inglés, Facultad de Lenguas (UNCo). Este género supone un lector activo que aporte su propio entendimiento a la ambigüedad inherente al micro-cuento, ya que este estímulo, acotado en apariencia, es, en esencia, infinito en pluralidad de interpretaciones. Así, a partir de una mini-ficción, se obtiene una fuente ilimitada de debate que permite el abordaje de una multiplicidad de temas. En nuestra experiencia, la posibilidad de conocer y explorar otras realidades da a los estudiantes una visión panorámica que les permite valorar la diversidad cultural. <br />En la materia Inglés IV, se propuso a los alumnos trabajar en grupo para seleccionar un cuento corto, analizarlo y formular preguntas que generaran la discusión de los temas centrales en él. En un paso posterior, dirigieron una clase para sus compañeros en la que se debatieron las diferentes opiniones. La naturaleza de las mini-ficciones dio lugar a una riqueza de interpretaciones, fomentada por la política de flexibilidad que se condice con los objetivos de la cátedra. Esta experiencia redundó en beneficios para el grupo en su conjunto: utilizaron la lengua meta en todo momento, se enfrentaron a nuevos universos socio-culturales, y desarrollaron una actitud de tolerancia a la ambigüedad y a la diversidad de opiniones.</p>
<p><br />ABSTRACT<br /><br />In our academic context, the short-short story in English presents itself as a linguistic, sociocultural and affective challenge for those brave enough to face it. This work explores the potential of this genre as a tool for the development of oral skills in English as a Foreign Language, in advanced students taking the Teacher- and Translator- Training courses at Facultad de Lenguas (UNCo). This genre demands an act ive reader that brings his own understanding of the ambiguity inherent in the text to the reading of the story. This stimulus, which may seem as small as a particle, is, in essence, infinite in the wealth of interpretations it may trigger. Thus, from a short story, we get an unlimited source of debate that gives way to the discussion of various topics. The possibility to get to know and explore other worlds gives our students a panoramic view that makes it possible for them to value cultural diversity. Students taking the English IV course in 2010 were encouraged to work in groups to select a short story, analyse it, and pose questions to generate the discussion of the main themes in the texts. At a later stage, they delivered a lesson for their classmates with a debate of students’ opinions. The nature of micro-fiction triggered a richness of interpretations, fueled by the flexibility policy that is part of the objectives of the subject. This experience was beneficial for the course as a whole: students made use the target language at all times, they faced new sociocultural universes and they developed tolerance of ambiguity and of diversity of opinion.</p>

<p>This paper will discuss the results obtained during an investigation into different affective factors influencing reading within an EFL university course. After a review of previous research into reading comprehension in this context, and of theoretical issues related to affect and language learning, we turn to the study of thirty essays written by advanced university learners of English and their views about reading. In section 5, we present a) the roles reading fulfills in their lives, b) evidence of the impact of affective factors in the development of this activity and c) learners‟ and teachers‟ underlying assumptions about the practice of reading and its benefits.</p>

<p>Since 1997 we have been researching the acquisition of instrumentals, initially, compounds, then dor- derived nominals and finally, a comparison of both forms. Spanish-speaking children of ages between 2 and 8 were asked to produce the researched forms as names for non-existent instruments under varied experimental circumstances. Throughout 2004 a case study was carried out to record spontaneous productions of both verb-noun compounds and -dor instrumentals by three children of 2, 3 and 7 years of age. This paper presents the data-gathering procedures, the analysis of the results obtained in this case study and the interpretation of these spontaneous productions in the light of the results discussed in previous investigations.</p>

En las últimas décadas de investigación lingüística sobre el léxico se observa una marcada recurrencia de cadenas de palabras que se acompañan con una frecuencia significativa. Incontables estudios de distintos tipos de corpus han demostrado que el Léxico no sólo constituye una lista de palabras individuales, sino que, en nuestra mente, también se almacenan secuencias de palabras que han sido registradas por su alta frecuencia en el input al que hemos sido expuestos
(Wray 2002, 2008; Hoey 2005). Si bien inicialmente estas investigaciones se aplicaron a corpus de lengua materna (Sinclair
1991; Granger y Meunier 2008), las implicancias para el aprendizaje de un idioma extranjero se han convertido en una problemática central en la lingüística aplicada (Ghadessy, Herny y Roseberry 2001; Meunier y Granger 2008; Corrigan, Moravcsik, Ouali y Wheatley 2009; Li and Schmitt 2010). Este cambio de perspectiva ha determinado nuevas líneas de estudio para la enseñanza de estas cadenas léxicas que llamaremos “secuencias formulaicas” (SF) siguiendo a Wray (2002), quien las define como “una secuencia, continua o discontinua, de palabras o de otros elementos, que es, o parece ser, prefabricada, es decir, almacenada y recuperada como una unidad de la memoria en el momento de uso, en lugar de estar sujeta a generación o análisis de la gramática del lenguaje" (p. 9). En nuestro estudio analizamos los ensayos académicos (111.000
palabras) escritos por 240 estudiantes hispanoparlantes avanzados de inglés en la Universidad de Comahue, con su consentimiento. Estudiamos aquellas SFs que introducen puntos de vista, describimos la frecuencia de uso de SFs como ‘from my/this point of view’ y ‘all things considered’ y establecemos patrones de uso canónicos y no canónicos en el corpus. A partir de los resultados, delineamos propuestas didácticas orientadas a la enseñanza de estas secuencias, esenciales para el tipo de texto estudiado (Jones y Haywood 2004). Considerando su comportamiento como unidades de significado y su composición heterogénea, así como la importancia que el manejo de las mismas implica para estudiantes avanzados de ILE, señalamos pautas metodológicas orientadas a equipar a los alumnos de herramientas léxicas para lograr mayor naturalidad en su discurso.

<p>Hace varias décadas que las canciones gozan de un lugar tanto destacado como polémico en el aula para el aprendizaje de los idiomas extranjeros (Rodríguez Lopez 2005; Mazzucheli y Mazzucheli 2006). La problemática alrededor de este género en contextos pedagógicos gira en torno al impacto de las mismas en la presentación y práctica de estructuras gramaticales y la incorporación de vocabulario específico. Las nuevas perspectivas del vocabulario y su enseñanza (Sinclair 1991;Lewis 1993, 1997 y 2000; Hoey 2005; Meunier y Granger 2008; Schmitt 2010) promueven una visión del léxico que supera a la palabra como unidad de análisis, enfatizando la enseñanza de distintos tipos de unidades plurilexemáticas, entre las que se encuentran las secuencias formulaicas (SFs). Estas unidades son, según Wray (2002), "una secuencia, continua o discontinua, de palabras […] almacenada y recuperada como una unidad de la memoria en el momento de uso” no sujeta a generación o análisis de la gramática del lenguaje” (p. 9). Como experiencia piloto se diseñó y dictó una clase focalizada en secuencias formulaicas de una canción a un grupo reducido de alumnos universitarios avanzados del Profesorado y Traductorado en Inglés, Fadel, UNCo, luego de la cual se les suministró una encuesta. Dicho cuestionario los invitaba a reflexionar sobre el uso de canciones en el aprendizaje de un idioma extranjero para así determinar si las tareas diseñadas facilitaban la adquisición de las secuencias seleccionadas. A partir de los resultados, se esbozan posibles líneas de acción para enseñar SFs por medio de canciones en contextos similares, que permitan a los alumnos ampliar su léxico mediante construcciones más idiomáticas y naturales según el uso nativo. Asimismo, se sugieren opciones de diseño de materiales didácticos para su implementación con miras a construir un entorno de aprendizaje significativo y perdurable que favorezca la apropiación de nuestro objeto de estudio.</p>

Este trabajo se inscribe en el marco del Proyecto de Investigación J023 dirigido por M. The study of native language corpora has shown that language presents repeated strings of words across texts and contexts, which might indicate that much more of language is patterned around clusters of words than was originally thought. The concept of the lexicon as made up of words in isolation is slowly giving way to a different perspective which has as its units recurrent sequences of words, some of which performing as discourse organizers. In this article we analyse a corpus of 237 academic essays (114,514 words) written by Spanish-speaking advanced learners of English at Comahue University in order to characterize their use of certain discourse-organizing formulaic sequences. First, an overview of the major changes in perspective is offered with respect to depth of knowledge of vocabulary, the nature of the lexicon and the role of lexis in language. Then, the learner corpus of formulaic sequences (FSs) is described in terms of the context, the corpus description and the selection of FSs. Results are presented for each of the selected FSs and compared to occurrences of those same strings in the British National Corpus. Finally, in the light of this study’s findings some suggestions for the teaching of vocabulary are provided that will contribute to learners’ acquisition of large chunks of language.

Este proyecto estudia el impacto de la exposición natural y de la enseñanza explícita en la adquisición (comprensión y producción) de secuencias formulaicas (SFs) en inglés como lengua extranjera (ILE) en lenguaje escrito, en situaciones de uso espontáneo y en actividades controladas. Se investiga, por un lado, el efecto causado por la enseñanza de este tipo de secuencias en dos asignaturas de inglés de la Facultad de Lenguas. Se medirá la adquisición de estas SFs a través de una batería de tests y de producciones escritas. Por otra parte, se analiza el grado de aprendizaje implícito de estas secuencias generado a partir de material de lectura de la asignatura Didáctica Especial y Residencia I. Los datos obtenidos en los distintos experimentos serán de utilidad para los docentes de todos los idiomas, tanto de nivel inicial, primario y secundario como así también universitario.<br />Asimismo, para caracterizar la competencia formulaica de alumnos universitarios de nivel avanzado de inglés, se ha abordado el análisis de un corpus de ensayos argumentativos y así detectar posibles dificultades en su adquisición. A la fecha se han realizado dos búsquedas: a) SFs de opinión y b) de organización del discurso. <p>University learners of a foreign language seem to encounter numerous difficulties in the acquisition of what Wray (2002) has termed ‘formulaic sequences’ (FSs) to such an extent that they will sound unnatural in their construction of meaning (Lewis 2009; Wiktorsson 2003). Reseachers like Boers and Lindstromberg (2012) and Granger and Meunier (2008) advocate the explicit teaching of these sequences as beneficial for the development of L2 learners’ formulaic competence. Based on research carried out by Čolović-Marković (2012) and Peters and Pauwels (2015), this paper reports on a vocabulary-focused instruction experience with three groups of university English-as-a-Foreign-Language (EFL) learners taking the English-teacher training course at Comahue University. The study explores the effects of two different instruction conditions for the teaching of nine pedagogically relevant FSs on two experimental groups (EG1 and EG2) in comparison with a control group (CG). The research aims to analyse fourth-year Spanish speaking learners’ acquisition rate of the target sequences (TFSs) a) in controlled settings (cued-output tests) and b) in spontaneous written production. It also aims to assess the degree of correctness/ variation with which TFSs are retrieved in both situations (controlled and free). The research questions are:<br />1. Does vocabulary form-focused instruction of FSs have an effect on a) number of FSs recalled and b) number of FSs used spontaneously?<br />2. Does the type of focused instruction of FSs have an effect on a) number of FSs recalled and b) number of FSs used spontaneously?<br />3. How similar /different are learners’ versions to the target FSs? For 1 and 2 above, a fourth research question applies,<br />4. If so, how long after the intervention does the effect continue to exist?<br />The teaching conditions for EG1 included a combination of meaning-form-use awareness-raising tasks, a dictogloss (Wajnryb 1990) and cued-output practice activities. EG2’s treatment consists of only two dictogloss, controlled production tasks. A pre-test/postest within-subject design was adopted. Data were collected through a) three cued-output postests (immediately after instruction, and two delayed) and, to measure spontaneous use of FSs, b) through three written practical assignments (essays), submitted by participants as part of the course requirements. This paper centres on the descriptive analysis of the effects of explicit instruction as measured through the rate of correct and non-target answers in both data collection procedures. The findings shed light on the type of variations introduced in learners’ answers to the different tasks, which evince a certain degree of formulaicity observed in the syntactic make-up of the phrases, while FS form seems to be negatively affected by the recall of function words. Meaning and pragmatic appropriacy appear to suffer in some other cases, even if, in appearance, the TFSs have been correctly retrieved. On the whole, although there are significant benefits in the teaching of FSs in this particular learning context, more delayed data collection tasks reveal higher degrees of variations in L2 learner FS use.</p>

Los estudios de lingüística de corpus de lenguaje en uso en diversos idiomas señalan la necesidad de un cambio de perspectiva con respecto al léxico ya no como un reservorio de palabras individuales sino como un repertorio de frases pre-fabricadas que los hablantes almacenan en su memoria. Entre estas frases se encuentran las secuencias formulaicas (Wray 2002), también denominadas “unidades equivalentes de morfemas” (Wray 2008), que constituyen unidades de significado recuperadas de la memoria como un todo, que sufren pocas modificaciones y no se generan de manera creativa. Diversos autores han demostrado que la didáctica de las lenguas extranjeras, por lo tanto, debe reflejar esta concepción del lenguaje de manera tal de garantizar una adquisición gradual y desde etapas tempranas de este lenguaje formulaico que permite a los hablantes comunicar significados de manera fluida y eficiente. Se sugiere un abordaje a la enseñanza del vocabulario en una lengua extranjera que, a través de la instrucción explícita con técnicas del Enfoque en la Forma, permita dirigir la atención de los estudiantes a la existencia y recurrencia de estas frases, sus usos y funciones y brindarles oportunidades para su práctica y empleo productivo en contextos guiados y más libres. Es imprescindible que estas perspectivas se traduzcan en modificaciones dentro de las asignaturas didácticas y de desarrollo de competencia lingüística de los idiomas en el nivel universitario y de formación para que luego alcancen todos los niveles de enseñanza de los idiomas extranjeros.

Based on studies carried out at FADeL, a set of practical tips on FS teaching for the FL classroom are offered in relation to the nature of the sequences to teach and of the pedagogical intervention planned, the number of hours devoted to FS teaching, and activity types both for the teaching and practice of these chunks and for testing. Other important factors to consider refer to learner characteristics, learning style and FS awareness.

This paper draws on research into formulaic sequence (FS) acquisition to derive practical implications for the teaching of vocabulary in a foreign language (FL). Based on studies carried out at FADeL, a set of practical tips on FS teaching for the FL classroom are offered in relation to the nature of the sequences to teach and of the pedagogical intervention planned, the number of hours devoted to FS teaching, and activity types both for the teaching and practice of these chunks and for testing. Other important factors to take into account refer to learner characteristics, learning style and FS awareness.
Research into different multiword phrases has shed light on the need to devote teaching time to these sequences in foreign language classrooms. A shift away from the individual word to, among others, the formulaic sequence (FS), defined by Wray (2002) as “a sequence, continuous or discontinuous, of words or other elements, which is, or appears to be, prefabricated: that is, stored and retrieved whole from memory at the time of use, rather than being subject to generation or analysis by the language grammar” (p. 9), has led to studies which analyse the effects of explicit instruction of FSs in different educational contexts and levels of proficiency in the foreign language. There is by now sufficient evidence (Ab Manan et al. 2014a and b; Alhassan and Wood 2015; Boers and Lindstromberg 2012; Čolović-Marković 2012; Jones and Haywood 2004; Lewis 2009; Peters and Pauwels 2015 and Wood 2015) that advocates the teaching of formulaic sequences in EFL contexts. One such study carried out in an Argentinean university with Spanish-speaking learners of English of different proficiency levels has highlighted the implications of a number of relevant issues in connection with the learning and, consequently, the teaching of vocabulary in general to learners of different levels and in multiple learning contexts. The findings refer to a) three explicit, focus-on-form FS instruction experiments (with beginner level and advanced level students), b) a small-corpus study into FS implicit learning in a content-based course, c) a longitudinal case study of one learner’s formulaic competence across his written production in an academic year and d) the acquisition of song-derived FSs by senior adults taking a reading comprehension course at university.
The data obtained point to learners’ heightened awareness of the patterns of use and meanings of the selected FSs as a result of pedagogical intervention. Significant benefits of FS teaching have been found for FS retrieval and acquisition in controlled conditions and free contexts. There is little evidence of incidental intake of FSs present in the reading material by learners, which shows that attention needs to be explicitly drawn to their existence, pervasiveness, use, form and meanings. The longitudinal case study reveals a systematic and conscious approach to FS learning, with evidence of a continuously recycled and intentionally refurbished process of FS acquisition. FS recognition and comprehension has been proved to improve in time through a FS-focused approach and even elderly participants evince an important degree of sensitivity to the internal make-up of FSs.
The different sets of data attest to the benefits of FS explicitly instruction in a foreign language as a means of equipping learners with prefabricated units of meaning to perform more naturally in the L2. Practical tips on FS teaching for the FL classroom are offered in relation to the nature of the sequences to teach and of the pedagogical intervention planned, the number of hours devoted to instruction, and activity types both for the teaching and practice of these chunks and for testing purposes.

Los estudiantes de ILE (inglés como lengua extranjera) que aspiran a lograr un nivel elevado de competencia general a menudo tienen dificultades para producir textos escritos que respondan a la formulaicidad adecuada típica del uso nativo. En un curso universitario avanzado de ILE en la Universidad Nacional del Comahue, se diseñó una experiencia de enfoque en la forma (FonF) (Doughty y ‎Williams, 1998) para ayudar a los alumnos a percibir nueve secuencias formulaicas (SFs), recuperarlas de la memoria y usarlas productivamente. Wray (2002) se refiere a las secuencias formulaicas, definiéndolas como "una secuencia, continua o discontinua, de palabras […] almacenada y recuperada de la memoria como una unidad en el momento de uso, no sujeta a generación o análisis de la gramática del lenguaje” (p. 9). En dos oportunidades se utilizó un ejercicio de dictogloss modificado (Wajnryb 1990) como técnica para proporcionar a los estudiantes oportunidades para enfocarse en el significado, la forma y el uso contextualizado de las SFs. Esta técnica consiste en el dictado a velocidad normal de habla de un texto – en este caso diseñado especialmente para contener las SFs estudiadas – de manera tal que los estudiantes no puedan reproducirlo palabra por palabra, a pesar de que tomen notas durante el dictado. En una etapa subsiguiente en grupos intentan escribir un texto que exprese los mismos significados que percibieron en el texto original. En un último momento se comparan las versiones ofrecidas por los distintos grupos con la versión original y se selecciona aquella que mejor transmita las ideas dictadas. En nuestra presentación evaluamos la efectividad de este tipo de tarea según la producción inmediata y posterior de ensayos argumentativos. Existe evidencia aún tres meses después del dictogloss de un alto grado de uso espontáneo de SFs apropiado al contexto y correcto en su forma.

<p align="justify"><span xml:lang="en" lang="en"><em>ABSTRACT</em><br />Corpus studies into the nature of language and the interrelationship between grammar and lexis have highlighted the pervasiveness of recurrent strings of words essential to the construction of meaning which Wray [2002: 9] has named “formulaic sequences” (FS). Research by Boers<span> </span></span><em><span xml:lang="en" lang="en">et al</span></em><span xml:lang="en" lang="en"><span> </span>[2006], Eyckmans [2007], Stengers [2009] and Wray & Fitzpatrick [2008] suggests that good command of these phrases in the foreign language (FL), of their typical occurrence and of their use restrictions contributes to learners’ fluency, and is taken as evidence of a high level of proficiency. Boers & Lindstromberg [2012] argue that explicit FS instruction accompanied by awareness-raising tasks yield significant learning gains, especially in FL contexts. As a pushed-output procedure, Wajnryb’s dictogloss technique [1990] has recently been adapted in FS-focused instruction studies like those of Janssens [2016] and Lindstromberg, Eyckmans & Connabeer [2016]. In similar fashion, we designed an experimental study for the teaching of nine pedagogically relevant sequences with Spanish-L1 EFL university learners. Two types of treatment were implemented with a focus on the target FSs’ meanings, forms and uses with two naturally-occurring learner groups (Group 1, N=13, and Group 2, N=17), whose performance was compared to that of a control group (N=7). Group 1 completed a set of Focus-on-Form activities [Doughty & Williams 1998], while Group 2 carried out two sessions of FS-oriented dictogloss. Results show that learners in Group 2 produced 40 instances of the target FS in five essay-writing tasks at different stages of the study and as late as a month and a half post intervention. By contrast, Group 1 produced 23 instances of seven target FSs across three essay writing tasks, six weeks after treatment. These findings indicate that dictogloss seems to reinforce advanced students’ familiarization with target FS in context, and FS memory retention over time. Based on the descriptive analysis of uncued target FSs produced by learners in their written production tasks, the possible contributions of dictogloss to long-term FS acquisition are discussed.</span></p>

<p align="justify">Décadas de estudios de corpus sobre el uso del lenguaje confirman que el lenguaje se compone en gran medida de lenguaje prefabricado o formulaico (Erman y Warren, 2000), es decir, de combinaciones de frases que se emplean para transmitir un mismo mensaje denominadas ‘secuencias formulaicas’ (SSFF) (Wray, 2002) que cumplen diversas funciones comunicativas en un idioma. Esta visión del léxico en general señala que la enseñanza del vocabulario en una L2 (extranjera o segunda) debe focalizarse no ya en ítems léxicos individuales sino en estas secuencias frecuentes. Surge así una nueva pedagogía necesaria para contribuir a la percepción en el input de estas cadenas de palabras por parte de los aprendientes y fomentar su práctica y uso cotidiano. Boers y Lindstromberg (2012) resumen numerosas investigaciones que demuestran el mayor impacto de la instrucción explícita de SSFF en la adquisición de estas unidades de significado por sobre un abordaje implícito. Estudios experimentales como Fernández y Valcarce (2017) y Zinkgraf y Verdú (2017) señalan los beneficios de la metodología de enfoque en la forma a la enseñanza de SSFF en futuros docentes de inglés como lengua extranjera en su reconocimiento y en producción guiada y espontánea. Este trabajo describe una propuesta de enseñanza explícita de vocabulario basada en secuencias formulaicas y presenta los objetivos y procedimientos para explorar la adquisición de SSFF de canciones y leyendas en estudiantes de inglés de escuelas de nivel primario en Argentina. Se discuten los fundamentos teóricos que subyacen el diseño de materiales para esta experiencia piloto.<br /><br /><em>Abstract</em></p>
<p align="justify">More than three decades of studies in corpus linguistics confirm that language use is composed to a great extent of prefabricated or formulaic language (Erman & Warren 2000), that is, of combinations of phrases used to convey the same message. These phrases, called ‘formulaic sequences’ (FSs) by Wray (2002) recurrently fulfill a set of communicative functions in language. This shifting perspective of the lexicon in general suggests that the teaching of a foreign (or second) language needs to focus not on individual lexical items but on these frequent sequences. A new approach is necessary to contribute to learners’ noticing of these strings of words in the input to later encourage their practice and use. <p align="justify">Décadas de estudios de corpus sobre el uso del lenguaje confirman que el lenguaje se compone en gran medida de lenguaje prefabricado o formulaico (Erman y Warren, 2000), es decir, de combinaciones de frases que se emplean para transmitir un mismo mensaje denominadas ‘secuencias formulaicas’ (SSFF) (Wray, 2002) que cumplen diversas funciones comunicativas en un idioma. Esta visión del léxico en general señala que la enseñanza del vocabulario en una L2 (extranjera o segunda) debe focalizarse no ya en ítems léxicos individuales sino en estas secuencias frecuentes. Surge así una nueva pedagogía necesaria para contribuir a la percepción en el input de estas cadenas de palabras por parte de los aprendientes y fomentar su práctica y uso cotidiano. Boers y Lindstromberg (2012) resumen numerosas investigaciones que demuestran el mayor impacto de la instrucción explícita de SSFF en la adquisición de estas unidades de significado por sobre un abordaje implícito. Estudios experimentales como Fernández y Valcarce (2017) y Zinkgraf y Verdú (2017) señalan los beneficios de la metodología de enfoque en la forma a la enseñanza de SSFF en futuros docentes de inglés como lengua extranjera en su reconocimiento y en producción guiada y espontánea. Este trabajo describe una propuesta de enseñanza explícita de vocabulario basada en secuencias formulaicas y presenta los objetivos y procedimientos para explorar la adquisición de SSFF de canciones y leyendas en estudiantes de inglés de escuelas de nivel primario en Argentina. Se discuten los fundamentos teóricos que subyacen el diseño de materiales para esta experiencia piloto.<br /><br /><em>Abstract</em></p>
<p align="justify">More than three decades of studies in corpus linguistics confirm that language use is composed to a great extent of prefabricated or formulaic language (Erman & Warren 2000), that is, of combinations of phrases used to convey the same message. These phrases, called ‘formulaic sequences’ (FSs) by Wray (2002) recurrently fulfill a set of communicative functions in language. This shifting perspective of the lexicon in general suggests that the teaching of a foreign (or second) language needs to focus not on individual lexical items but on these frequent sequences. A new approach is necessary to contribute to learners’ noticing of these strings of words in the input to later encourage their practice and use.
