Abstract
A summary of the resource.

ABSTRACT
Corpus studies into the nature of language and the interrelationship between grammar and lexis have highlighted the pervasiveness of recurrent strings of words essential to the construction of meaning which Wray [2002: 9] has named “formulaic sequences” (FS). Research by Boers et al [2006], Eyckmans [2007], Stengers [2009] and Wray & Fitzpatrick [2008] suggests that good command of these phrases in the foreign language (FL), of their typical occurrence and of their use restrictions contributes to learners’ fluency, and is taken as evidence of a high level of proficiency. Boers & Lindstromberg [2012] argue that explicit FS instruction accompanied by awareness-raising tasks yield significant learning gains, especially in FL contexts. As a pushed-output procedure, Wajnryb’s dictogloss technique [1990] has recently been adapted in FS-focused instruction studies like those of Janssens [2016] and Lindstromberg, Eyckmans & Connabeer [2016]. In similar fashion, we designed an experimental study for the teaching of nine pedagogically relevant sequences with Spanish-L1 EFL university learners. Two types of treatment were implemented with a focus on the target FSs’ meanings, forms and uses with two naturally-occurring learner groups (Group 1, N=13, and Group 2, N=17), whose performance was compared to that of a control group (N=7). Group 1 completed a set of Focus-on-Form activities [Doughty & Williams 1998], while Group 2 carried out two sessions of FS-oriented dictogloss. Results show that learners in Group 2 produced 40 instances of the target FS in five essay-writing tasks at different stages of the study and as late as a month and a half post intervention. By contrast, Group 1 produced 23 instances of seven target FSs across three essay writing tasks, six weeks after treatment. These findings indicate that dictogloss seems to reinforce advanced students’ familiarization with target FS in context, and FS memory retention over time. Based on the descriptive analysis of uncued target FSs produced by learners in their written production tasks, the possible contributions of dictogloss to long-term FS acquisition are discussed.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.

The study of collocation – the restricted way in which two or more words combine across texts – has recently gained much relevance. The acquisition of these combinations has proved an important obstacle for non-native speakers of a foreign language as evinced in recorded unusual combinations of words. This paper analyses nonstandard collocations present in the written production of Spanish-speaking university students of English as a foreign language (EFL), in search of recurrent patterns and strategies that may explain these inappropriate collocations as a way to contribute to EFL teaching and learning. The results show a considerable influence of learners’ mother tongue, which induces them to translate literally from L1 into L2 one or both elements in any given collocation. Semantic overlap between appropriate forms and possible synonyms of either the base or the collocate appears to be another factor leading to error. The study also points to some verbs which in this particular context might require consistent and explicit teaching.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
ABSTRACT
The marginal clitics phenomena have been studied in several Romance languages and languages like Modern Greek (Spitzer 1941, Bibis & Roberge 2004, Espinal 2009, Leivada & Grohmann 2014, among other authors). In Rioplantense Spanish, the marginal clitic la (3.sg.Acc.fem) occurs productively in verbs such as zurdearla (‘left-ear it’), kirchneriarla (‘Kirchner-ear it’) y hipiarla (‘hippie-ear it’), principally in informal register. In contrast to the cases studied in the literature, this is a recurring morphological and semantic pattern, i.e., [Npredicative/modal-ear-CLmarginal.Acc.fem.sg]Verb. The aim of this paper is to describe the syntactic and semantic characteristics of [Npredicative/modal-ear-CLmarginal.Acc.fem.sg]Verb verbs. In order to do this, we postulate the following hypothesis: the verbs studied are not idiomatic expressions but productive phenomena whose meaning is compositional. Our analysis is based on neo-constructionist approaches, in the Generative Grammar framework. These theories propose that all syntactic structures are built by combining functional heads and grammatically opaque roots, which gives rise to compositional and predictable meanings.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
ABSTRACT
The objective of this article is to present a didactic proposal through which the study of grammar contents could foster the systematization and strengthening of strategies to comprehend and produce texts on the part of students. In concrete, the activities provided are specially designed for first, second and third period of elementary school. The grammatical content that serves as a focal point for our discussion is argument structure of predicates. According to Grimshaw (1990), argument structure is the lexical representation of the grammatical information about a given predicate (i.e., quantity and hierarchy of arguments and thematic roles). On the basis of this definition, we argue that grammar activities on distinct aspects of argument structure can serve as a strategy to comprehend how meaning is structured at the level of the sentence. Furthermore, the work on argument structure allows us to reconsider some of the stipulated contents present in official curricular designs (concretely, the curriculum design of Río Negro, Argentina).

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Abstract
The goal of this essay is to emphasize an analogy between language creativity and the inventive power of Diego Armando Maradona’s football. Accordingly, we develop some syntactic and semantic remarks concerning sequences like el Diego, in which there is proper noun preceded by a definite article. The essay tries to show that in these phrases the proper noun presents characteristics, features and properties of the referred entity. This process would show that the proper noun is recategorized as a common noun and, as such can hence be combined with a definite article.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.

This work studies structures with Subject Duplication (DdS) in Northpatagonian Spanish. DdS structures constitute one single speech act and intonational phrase (IP). Although the two manifestations of the subject (S1 and S2) are co-referential, they exhibit markedly different syntactic, prosodic and RASAL © - Revista de la Sociedad Argentina de Estudios Lingüísticos - 2021: 71-95 72 DUPLICACIÓN DE SUJETOS EN EL ESPAÑOL DE LA NORPATAGONIA informative features. In addition, there is a restriction regarding the linear disposition of DdS. S1 and S2 cannot be adjacent, and at least the intonational phrase nucleus (IN) must occur between them. The aim of this work is to offer an analysis of DdS. Our main claim is that DdS structures involve a coordination of two clauses, CP1 and CP2. In CP2, S2 moves-A’ to the left periphery of the clause. Then, TP is elided. Our analysis is based on the proposals of Ott & de Vries’s (2016), Truckenbrodt (2016), and Fernández-Sánchez (2017), among others, for cases of right-dislocation (RD). Specifically, we argue that DdS structures are comparable to RD in syntactic, prosodic, and informative terms.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
ABSTRACT
This paper addresses the realisation of the subject in L2 English in a case of non-canonical mapping between theta roles and syntactic functions, specifically in the case of unaccusatives. The learners’ L1 is Spanish, which differs from English in two crucial respects: (i) in English, as opposed to Spanish, the subject is obligatorily overt, and (ii) in English, declarative sentences the subject precedes the finite verb, while Spanish allows for postverbal subjects in some cases, notably with unaccusatives and passives. We will examine the issue by means of a grammaticality judgment and a translation task. The final aim is to explore the relation between errors and linguistic intuitions of the learners, as well as the importance of linguistically informed teaching. Keywords: unaccusatives, thematic roles and syntactic functions, second language acquisition

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
ABSTRACT
The Generative framework argues that human beings are genetically endowed to acquire language. This capacity comes from a language faculty with linguistic specifications that shape the language acquisition process. According to this approach, the child does not attend school to learn his mother tongue since he has already acquired it and this language is as perfect and complex as any other human language in the world. In this sense, it is suggested that we move away from a traditional view on grammar teaching that only focuses school practices on activities such as rule memorisation or sentence analysis. This paper analyses the pedagogical implications that the Innatist programme has on the teaching of grammar in the language classroom. First, we reflect on the notions of grammaticality, correctness and adequacy and how these can materialise into activities that allow for the exploration of language through activities that involve the analysis, comparison and generalisation of linguistic phenomena. To achieve this aim, the activities proposed in two workshops for teachers, in Río Negro will be analysed. These show a possible way in which these central axes can be dealt with in grammar topics such as the use of the definite article with proper names and different agreement phenomena in the Spanish variety characteristic of people at Linea Sur in our province.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
ABSTRACT
Diachronic studies have received varying degrees of attention in the linguistic research agenda. Currently, in the Generative framework, diachronic approaches have become relevant to the exploration and analysis of the acquisition problem from a new perspective. In this paper, we focus on the relationship between language change and language acquisition, in order to advance some insights on the current goals of Generative Grammar, taking into account both lines of research.

An account of the resource

Abstract
A summary of the resource.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Abstract
Myths are found in different fields. In this essay we focus on the myth of difficulty in relation to an apparent lack of reasoning. In order to question this myth, we propose an account of one of the most characteristic instruments in Argentinian popular music, the bandoneon, and of the alleged difficulty associated with some languages. Our goal is to show that this myth is not only false for languages and bandoneons, but it also may result in dangerous consequences for both.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
ABSTRACT
Every scientific discipline has a set of terms and definitions to describe its object of study. These labels are fundamental both for the analysis and for the communication of results and the subsequent replication of a work methodology with other exponents of that object. The problem arises when the labels become confused with the object itself and begin to play a much more prominent role than the one desirable in Science, causing us to fall into the well-known statement that “the error is in the corpse, but not in Galen”. The following pages explore this problem in the field of linguistics. To that end, we dwell on the labels used for languages, for word classes and even on label for the word “word” itself.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.

ABSTRACT
In 2023, the framework known as Distributed Morphology will be 30 years old if we take as a reference the foundational text by Halle & Marantz (1993). The present manuscript attempts to recover the general features of the model and then to advance in some of the current discussions such as the number of proposed categorizers, the revision of the post-syntactic operations and the properties of roots. These are three lines of research that account for revisions of the model and also for future projections. Finally, this state-of-the-art looks at the pioneering work carried out on this approach in Argentina, which has taken the form of dissertations and articles in specialized journals.

Sobre las concordancias alternantes en español
Abstract
A summary of the resource.

ABSTRACT

The so-called ad sensum agreement is one of the most significant phenomena in Spanish and other languages. In this paper, we attempt to prove that this kind of agreement can be explained by the mechanisms related to the same factors involved in general agreement, i. e., the syntactic structure and the morphological operations. Our investigation is framed in Distributed Morphology (Halle y Marantz 1993) and it pretends to explain the alternating agreement and the blocking of this alternation in particular contexts, by analyzing, in detail, the structure of the Determiner Phrase and the features involved in the functional projections of the nominal scope.
