La finalidad de esta presentación es presentar a la audiencia los principios teóricos básicos que subyacen la enseñanza de un grupo de SSFF extraídas de una leyenda para niños. Posteriormente, se expondrán los criterios de selección y verificación de la frecuencia dedichas SSFF, junto con una descripción del proceso de adaptación del material al nivel de los estudiantes y de diseño de actividades. Finalmente, se compartirán algunas recomendaciones prácticas para la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de SSFF. Se espera que esta ponencia sensibilice a los profesores de ILE sobre los beneficios de la adopción deun enfoque formulaico de enseñanza de vocabulario a partir del uso de una leyenda y lesbrindelas herramientas para el diseño de planificaciones para tal fin. ABSTRACT. As educational tools, legends can strengthen L2 learners’ reading skills, contextualize specific language points, explain natural phenomena, and spark off lively debate about complex issues in the EFL classroom. They can also provide L2 learners with a rich diet of strings of words, which have been named “formulaic sequences” (FSs) by Wray (2002). Lindstromberg & Boers (2008) suggest that an extensive repertoire of these readymade units impacts positively on fluent writing and speaking and facilitates readingand listening comprehension as these sequences act as “islands of accuracy” (Lindstromberg & Boers, 2008) L2 learners can cling to while processing language (in bits). However, unlike L1 learners who can acquire these phrases effortlessly, L2 learnersfind it hard to notice the ubiquity of these phrases probably due to years of a word- focused, vocabulary teaching approach and insufficient exposure to the target language. In fact, FSs are like “big words” (Thornbury, 2019), so teaching individual words or FSsshould not differ considerably. Following Nation’s processes of learning vocabulary (2001) and Lindstromberg & Boers’ principles of effective vocabulary teaching (2008), EFL teachers are encouraged to draw their learners’ attention to FSs in any type of text, provide these learners with guided, consistent practice on the target FSs, and offer them opportunities to produce the selected chunks in meaningful contexts. This presentation aims at introducing the audience to the basic theoretical principles underlying the explicit instruction of some FSs selected from a legend for children. A set of steps concerning the selection criteria and verification of frequency of the target FSs will be outlined, together with a description of the process of material adaptation to the learner proficiency level and lesson design. Finally, some practical recommendations on the teaching and learning of FSs will be shared. This presentation is expected to sensitize EFL teachers to the pedagogical benefits of adopting a FS-based vocabulary teaching approach when working on a legend and equip them with some essential, useful tools for the design of their lesson plans.
