A la luz del Modelo Métrico-Autosegmental de la entonación y su aplicación al español rioplatense, el sistema entonativo de esta variedad utiliza tres configuraciones tonales en los enunciados declarativos: H+L* L% (descendente alta), L* L% (descendente baja) y L+H*+L L% (ascendente-descendente o tritonal) (Gabriel et al. 2010; Gabriel et al. 2013). En Labastía (2016), en el marco de la Teoría de la Relevancia (Sperber & Wilson 1995), propusimos que cada una de estas configuraciones constituye una instrucción para pro- cesar los enunciados de distinta manera, según la fuerza del supuesto que se comunica o el tipo de efecto cognitivo a lograr. El presente trabajo se centra en el estudio de las configuraciones L* L% y L+H*+L L%. El uso de la configuración L* L% indicaría que la aseveración tiene un carácter irrefutable y su impacto se orienta hacia la modificación de los supuestos del oyente, mientras que la configuración tritonal indicaría que la afirmación tiene un impacto en el entorno cognitivo que oyente y hablante comparten. A fin de testear estas hipótesis realizamos un experimento de interpretación a partir de la percepción auditiva, que busca profundizar el significado que los hablantes atribuyen a los enunciados declarativos con estas configuraciones tonales nucleares. As seen from the Autosegmental-Metrical approach to intonation, Buenos Aires Spanish has three falling nuclear configurations in declarative utterances: H+L* L% (high-falling), L* L% (low) and L+H*+L L% (rising-falling or tritonal) (Gabriel et al. 2010; Gabriel et al. 2013). In the Relevance Theory framework (Sperber & Wilson 1995), in Labastía (2016) we proposed that each of these configurations can be interpreted as a different processing instruction, depending on the strength of the assumption being communicated or the kind of cognitive effect to achieve. This paper focuses on the interpretation of the L* L% and L+H*+L L% configurations. We propose that L* L% indicates the assertion has an irrefutable character and is meant to modify the hearer’s assumptions, whereas the tritonal accent indicates that the assertion has an impact on the mutual cognitive environment shared by the speaker and the listener. In order to test these hypotheses, we carried out an interpretation experiment on the basis of auditory perception in order to ascertain the meaning that speakers of this variety attribute to declarative utterances with these nuclear configurations.

Esta variedad se caracteriza por unos fenómenos lingüísticos que evidencian la influencia del italiano, probablemente debida a una inmensa oleada inmigratoria entre la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y la primera mitad del siglo XX. Durante esa época llegaron a la Argentina o a l’Australia italiana más de tres millones de italianos (Devoto 2002: 25).1 Aunque sólo hay poca información sobre el origen preciso de los inmigrantes, diferentes asociaciones culturales indican que muchos de ellos provenían de Calabria, Sicilia, Nápoles y Génova. 2 Cabe añadir que los italianos constituían el grupo inmigratorio más grande de todos los europeos que entraban por aquellas épocas en la Argentina.

The aim of this research is to investigate the prosodic realization of two political discourse practices, a speech and an interview, by the same speaker. The different nuclear tone configurations and the segmentation of speech in prosodic units are studied: intermediate phrases, intonational phrases and phrase sequences. In particular, the role of phrase sequences and their intonation in the organization of discourse is studied, together with their impact in the realm of politics. From the pragmatic point of view, this work is based on Relevance Theory (Sperber and Wilson1995 Wilson and Sperber 2004) to account for the procedural meaning of each nuclear tone configuration (Labastía 2011, 2016, 2018Dabrowski and Labastía 2013). From the prosodic point of view, it is framed in the Autosegmental-Metrical model (Hualde, 2003) and the Sp_ToBI transcription system (Sosa 2003) applied to River Plate Spanish (Gabriel et al 2010). The different prosodic elements are identified and an auditory transcription is made of the initial fragments of both discourse practices, which is later corroborated by means of the PRAAT acoustic analysis software (Boersma and Weeninck 2019). An account of the resource
The aim of this research is to investigate the prosodic realization of two political discourse practices, a speech and an interview, by the same speaker. The different nuclear tone configurations and the segmentation of speech in prosodic units are studied: intermediate phrases, intonational phrases and phrase sequences. In particular, the role of phrase sequences and their intonation in the organization of discourse is studied, together with their impact in the realm of politics. From the pragmatic point of view, this work is based on Relevance Theory (Sperber and Wilson1995 Wilson and Sperber 2004) to account for the procedural meaning of each nuclear tone configuration (Labastía 2011, 2016, 2018Dabrowski and Labastía 2013). From the prosodic point of view, it is framed in the Autosegmental-Metrical model (Hualde, 2003) and the Sp_ToBI transcription system (Sosa 2003) applied to River Plate Spanish (Gabriel et al 2010). The different prosodic elements are identified and an auditory transcription is made of the initial fragments of both discourse practices, which is later corroborated by means of the PRAAT acoustic analysis software (Boersma and Weeninck 2019). Leopoldo Labastía es Doctor en Filología por la Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (Madrid, España) y Magíster en Lingüística por la Universidad Nacional del Comahue (Argentina). Su tesis de doctorado estudia la relación entre la entonación y la estructura informativa en español rioplatense. Trabaja como docente en la Universidad Nacional del Comahue (UNCo) desde el año 1990 y, en noviembre de 2022, a partir de su jubilación, fue nombrado Profesor titular ad honorem en esta casa de estudios. A nivel de posgrado ha dictado seminarios sobre fonología, semántica y pragmática en la Maestría en Lingüística y ha formado parte del cuerpo docente para el dictado del seminario introductorio correspondiente a las tres carreras de posgrado de la Facultad de Lenguas de la UNCo. En esta entrevista nos cuenta sobre su recorrido académico y los intereses en la investigación que lo han llevado a convertirse en un referente en lo que respecta a la relación entre la prosodia y la pragmática.
